Overview

Monuments and Memorials Photo Safari

Learn HOW and WHERE to take GREAT pictures of the nation's capital!

Iwo Jima at dawn with Photo Safari©2006 Photo Safari

Our Monuments and Memorials Photo Half-Day Photo Safari begins with a 35-minute orientation on basic techniques of travel photography, followed by hands-on instruction as you photograph such popular attractions at the White House, Lafayette Park, the Lincoln, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Womens Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial and its view down the Reflecting Pool towards the Washington Monument.

The safari ends with a visit to ornate Union Station, where the instructor teaches you how to photograph inside large interior spaces without flash or tripod.

If you stay on for the full day (offered Wednesdays only), the safari goes on after a brief lunch in Union Station to the colorful Adams- Morgan neighborhood with its unique architecture, to the famous Washington National Cathedral with its magnificent stained glass windows, and finally to the Iwo Jima War Memorial in Arlington, with its extraordinary view of the DC monuments across the Potomac.

Location: Renwick Gallery
Schedule: Wednesdays & Saturdays

You Will Learn How To:

  • hold the camera for maximum picture sharpness
  • use selective focus to determine the subject of each picture, using focus hold
  • frame your subject using available flowers, trees, bushes and doorways
  • keep your vertical lines as straight as possible for professional photos
  • fool your camera's meter, using exposure lock, so that it gives you the correct reading when facing backlit subjects or dark-colored subjects
  • take pleasing outdoor portraits in bright sunshine and in shade
  • pose people you do know in front of famous landmarks and monuments
  • take pictures of people you do not know
  • use the fill-flash and cancel-flash features of your camera
  • take pictures inside of large interior spaces, like train stations, churches and museums, without using a flash
  • take close-up pictures of flowers and statues
  • decide when to use black and white film vs. color
  • put strong composition lines and balance into your pictures
  • control depth-of-field with aperture priority settings
  • use the other doodads on your camera you were afraid to try

With Washington Photo Safari, you also get pre-safari advice on what film and equipment to bring, and available post-safari critique of the photos you take.
